The Client Brief For This Hallway, Stairs and Landing
The client approached us to completely reimagine their hallway, stairs and landing, which previously felt dark, disconnected and lacked a sense of welcome. The existing layout was uninspiring and poorly lit, making the journey through the home feel like a transition space rather than something to be enjoyed.
A key part of the brief was to introduce natural light, create a sense of height and drama, and inject much-needed warmth and elegance. The hallway had to feel like a destination in its own right, offering a cohesive flow between floors, a better arrival experience, and improved aesthetic harmony with the rest of the home.
The client expressed a desire for the entrance to feel more intentional and refined, setting the tone for the rest of the property. They wanted the space to evoke a sense of arrival and sophistication, not simply serve a practical function.
To elevate the home’s curb appeal, a new black front door was introduced for a clean, sophisticated first impression. Internally, the challenge was to make the most of the vaulted ceiling on the landing, open up the vertical space and make every detail, from the stair tread to the light fittings, feel deliberate and high end. The result had to be practical, beautiful, and emotionally uplifting.
The Design Thinking Behind this Hallway Stairs and Landing
What was once a dim and uninviting hallway, stairs and landing has been transformed into a light-filled, elegant space that celebrates both vertical drama and quiet luxury. The formerly dark circulation area now feels open, graceful, and grounded in thoughtful design, from the very first step through the new black front door, which adds sophistication, contrast, and instant curb appeal.
A carefully considered layout and use of materials bring cohesion and flow. Overhead, four strategically positioned skylights span the north and south-facing aspects of the stairwell, drawing daylight deep into the core of the home. This infusion of natural light enhances the sense of scale, completely transforming the once-shadowed space into a place of calm and clarity.
Here, features a thoughtfully placed bench, complete with a plush back cushion, inviting lingering moments to pause and appreciate the surrounding details.
Above the bench, twin glass-slatted chandeliers cast warm pools of ambient light, echoing the glow from above and reinforcing the elegance of the space. These sculptural fixtures balance modern luxury with classic proportion, enhancing the staircase’s visual rhythm.
As you travel upwards, an expansive verdant mural rises two stories, anchoring the space with nature-inspired artistry and encouraging the eye to travel upwards in admiration. Suspended above, a mesmerising jellyfish-shaped chandelier, dripping with silver beads, becomes a floating centre-piece, beautifully framed by the vaulted ceiling.
Beneath this dramatic composition lies the refined softness of a luxurious herringbone carpet, cushioning each step and introducing a tactile element that quiets the acoustics and elevates comfort.
A beautifully crafted oak chest, custom-built to disguise the home’s water tank, allows the architectural lines of the landing to remain uninterrupted. Its presence is both discreet and practical, adding function without compromising aesthetic integrity.
Live planting was introduced to enhance the feeling of calm and well-being.
Every inch of this hallway, stairs and landing has been designed with intention – from the curated lighting scheme and bespoke furnishings to the architectural enhancements that now allow the home’s volume and flow to shine. The once-forgotten thoroughfare is now a space that connects, uplifts, and impresses.
