The Client Brief for this Home Office
The client needed a highly functional yet creatively inspiring home office that reflected the unique nature of his business: trading vintage Marvel cards, predominantly with US-based clients. The space had to serve multiple purposes: daily desk work; Zoom meetings; product organisation; creative thinking, and the occasional need to simply recline and relax during long working hours, and to also listen to his favourite tunes at the end of his working day.
Huge storage requirements in a small space meant that bespoke storage solutions were needed, as well as a space for all the office gadgetry and a place to put your feet up! It was crucial that the room be highly efficient without feeling cluttered.
Style mattered just as much as practicality, this wasn’t just an office that was to store all of his precious merchandise, but a space the client would spend many hours in every day. He wanted something different from the typical corporate feel, something ‘wacky’ but stylish, characterful, and reflective of his love for pop culture and mid-century design.
Sound control was another priority, as this study was directly above the study below, along with layered smart lighting and comfortable plush furnishings. The client was clear that this office should balance form and function and serve as a place where work could feel effortless, creative and, most importantly, enjoyable.
The Design Thinking Behind this Home Office
This home office was designed for a client whose business, dealing in vintage Marvel trading cards, demanded a workspace that was as vibrant and unique as his product line. With limited square footage and large storage demands, the space needed to be smart, flexible, and highly personalised.
Bespoke cabinetry in black oak veneer anchors the scheme, creating a striking visual frame for bold accents and simultaneously meeting extensive storage requirements. Every shelf, drawer and niche was purpose-built to house card catalogues, equipment, packaging materials, and tech – all while keeping the space sleek and uncluttered.
The furniture layout and lighting plan were carefully considered to make the most of the compact footprint. A standout ergonomic chair in bright orange mesh adds a welcome injection of colour and comfort, complete with an integrated footrest for longer working sessions. Monochrome upholstery and accessories were used to balance the scheme, adding rhythm and contrast to the bold palette.
Mid-century references are layered throughout the room in a nod to the client’s business roots, from the clean lines of the rug to the retro-inspired storage door detailing and sculptural pendant light. Acoustic panels discreetly mounted on the walls help reduce echo and noise, creating a calm, comfortable working environment even during busy virtual calls.
LED strip lighting and dimmable ceiling lights were chosen for their flexibility and ease, allowing for customisable lighting scenes depending on the time of day or task at hand. A mid-century Italian glass pendant hangs beautifully to bring warmth and a sense of time to this contemporary space. Lighting controls also extended to smart controls on the two sets of blinds at each window, ensuring the occupier has full control at the touch of a button.
Together, the scheme brings a surprising level of luxury and character to this compact space, proof that a home office can be both stylish and deeply functional.
